Watch videos in Phyn

Use Phyn to watch movies, episodes, and other supported video items from your Jellyfin server.

Video playback depends on the file, your device, the network, and your Jellyfin server. Phyn tries to play media smoothly, but Jellyfin may still need to transcode some files when the device cannot play them directly.

Before you start

You need:

  • Phyn connected to your Jellyfin server.
  • A Jellyfin user with access to the video library.
  • A movie or episode that your Jellyfin user can play.
  • Network access to your server, unless the item has been downloaded for offline playback.

Play a video

  1. Open Phyn.
  2. Open a movie, show, season, or episode from your Jellyfin library.
  3. Select the item you want to watch.
  4. Select Play or the main play button.
  5. Use the player controls to pause, seek, change tracks, or adjust playback options where available.

Playback note: Direct play is best when your device supports the file. If the device does not support the file or selected quality, Jellyfin may transcode it before or during playback.

Immersive and 3D playback on Meta Quest

On Meta Quest, select Enter mixed reality from the navigation menu, then open your movie or episode. Scroll to Details and select the 3D Version if more than one version is available, then select Play.

Point your controller down or press B on the right controller to show the immersive control panel. Look downward to see it. You can grab and reposition the panel, and press B again to hide it.

Under Display → 3D format, choose FSBS, HSBS, HTAB, or FTAB for your 3D video. For side-by-side content, start with the file's label, then try both FSBS and HSBS if needed and keep whichever looks best. Half/full labels do not always match the best display setting. Choose 2D for regular videos.

If playback is slow or fails

If this happens, check these first:

  • The same item can play in Jellyfin Web.
  • Your device has a stable connection to the server.
  • The Jellyfin server is not overloaded.
  • A different movie or episode plays correctly.
  • Lowering playback quality improves the result.

Expected result

The video opens in Phyn's player and plays from your Jellyfin server or local offline copy.
