Fix video playback problems

Use this article when a movie or episode does not play, buffers heavily, stutters, shows an error, or behaves differently from other videos.

Playback depends on the media file, device support, network connection, selected tracks, and Jellyfin server performance.

Quick checks

  1. Try another video in Phyn.
  2. Confirm the same item plays in Jellyfin Web.
  3. Check that your device can still reach the Jellyfin server.
  4. Lower playback quality and try again.
  5. Turn off subtitles temporarily and try again.
  6. Restart Phyn and retry the item.

Narrow it down: If only one item fails, collect codec details for that item. If every item fails, start with server connection, account access, and network checks.

If one video fails

Open the item menu and select Media Info. Note the video codec, audio codec, subtitle codec, bitrate, and container. Send those details to support with the exact behavior you see.

If every video fails

Check that you are signed in to the correct server and that Jellyfin Web can play media for the same user. If Jellyfin Web also fails, the issue is likely server-side or account-related.
