Use background music playback

Background playback lets Phyn keep playing music while you use another app, lock your device, or move around the system.

This article focuses on background behavior. For basic music playback, start with Listen to music in Phyn.

Before you start

You need music playback working in Phyn first. Start a track and confirm it plays normally while the app is open.

Use background playback

  1. Start playing a track in Phyn.
  2. Leave the player open until playback has clearly started.
  3. Lock the device or switch to another app.
  4. Use the system media controls to pause, resume, or skip when available.

Platform behavior: Lock-screen controls, notification controls, and menu-bar controls depend on the platform. iOS, Android, and macOS do not expose media controls in exactly the same way.

If playback stops

If music stops shortly after leaving Phyn, check these items:

  • Battery saver or low-power mode is not restricting background activity.
  • The device still has network access to your Jellyfin server.
  • The track is not buffering or failing in Jellyfin.
  • Phyn is updated to the latest available version for your platform.

If only one album or track fails, try another track to separate a media-file problem from an app or network problem.

Expected result

Music continues until you pause it, the queue ends, the server becomes unreachable, or the operating system stops background activity.
